Buyer’s Move-In Checklist

After the last box is moved into your new home, you might think the hardest part of the move is over. And you’re right! But that doesn’t mean there aren’t things you need to do after the more. In face, there’s a lot of stuff that needs to get done before you can relax completely. Below we have compiled a list of things you should consider to do after the move!

Move-in Checklist for Buyer’s

Provided by Angie Spangler, RE/MAX Advanced, Inc.
• Use the home inventory you created prior to move to check on your items once you have made it to your new destination!
• Check major appliances and boxes! If you moved major appliances, such as a stove, dishwasher, washer or dryer, check to make sure all appliances and electronics are working to ensure nothing was damaged during the move. Also, make sure to check all boxes and furniture to ensure nothing was damaged during the move.
• Replace the locks. Don’t assume the keys you’re holding make up the only existing set. Error on the side of caution and have all of your locks changed. Contact Mike Brouwer with Lock-Pro at 970-231-3133, Keyhole Lock Shop at 970-484-6690, or Tri-City Security Locks at 970-223-1499.
• Reprogram the garage door opener. Again, it is better to be safe than sorry when it comes to security. *You can find manufacture’s manuals online if a copy didn’t come with the house.*
• Locate the water shutoffs and main circuit breaker. Find the main water shutoff as well as all outside water spigots. Check out the main circuit breaker to fully understand the labeling and re-label if necessary.
• Test the smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. Also, place a fire extinguisher on every level if there isn’t one already in place. It is Colorado law to have an operational carbon monoxide alarm installed within 15 feet of the entrance to each room lawfully used for sleeping purposes or in a location specified by any applicable building code and smoke detectors are required in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level.
• Update your address for the following if you haven’t made the change already: voter registration: https://www.sos.state.co.us/voter-classic/secuRegVoterIntro.do,
Driver’s license: https://www.colorado.gov/dmv, car registration: https://www.colorado.gov/apps/dor/dmv/vehicle/registration/renewal/welcome.jsf, new bank accounts, and other subscriptions you may belong to such as magazines.
• If you used professional services, your move is tax deductible so ensure to collect your receipts! Make sure you have your Bill of Lading (a detailed list of a shipment of goods in the form of a receipt given by the carrier to the person consigning the goods) and payment receipts.
• Make a list of the light bulbs your home requires and make sure to buy energy efficient replacements. Don’t forget the halogen lights and outside fixtures as well.
• Get connected with your new neighborhood. Buy a subscription to the local newspaper or community magazine. This can help you quickly get up to speed on what’s happening in your new location.
• Find new health professionals, including doctors, dentists, and vets. While this task can be put off for a bit, you’ll be glad you know who to call when an emergency hits. Ask our team for references!
• Create an emergency contact list including local emergency information as well as a first aid kit. It is also a good idea to figure out a strategy to use if you get locked out of your home.
• Take care of your finances-set up new accounts, have money transferred or order new checks with your new address.
• Get a library card!
• Have tools on hand with easy access for assembling furniture.
