Create a Small Garden

People are turning to home gardening to ease stress and get their hands dirty. You can start gardening if you have a windowsill, back patio, or yard. Try something new and create a small garden!

Consider Your Space and Climate

Your options for gardening will be different depending on what is available to you. Patios and balconies can support raised beds and container gardens. A kitchen wall with plenty of sunlight would be a great spot for a vertical pocket garden. Alternatively, look into the option of small portable growers that you could place in different places in your home. These small gardens are great for herbs and small vegetables.

Be aware of what climate you live in. Certain plants don’t grow as well in certain areas. If you live in a hot, dry climate, try stick to plants that require little water. If you live in a Southern state with a long growing season, tomatoes, peppers, or cucumbers are great. The Pacific Northwest, with its rainfall and cooler temperatures, is great for spinach, artichokes, broccoli, and beets.

Balcony Herb Garden

An herb garden is one of the most flexible garden options. Repurpose a short shelving unit by placing it on your balcony. By doing this, you can stack containers and have easy access for watering. Try using organic potting soil for planting herbs like sage, basil, and mint. Make sure to plant the herbs in their own separate containers. This will avoid the herbs competing for the same nutrients in the soil.

Porch Gardens

Porch gardens are becoming more popular during the current times. They add curb appeal while giving you space to grow beautiful flowers and fresh vegetables. A well-done porch garden will even feel like a retreat without having to leave your home! You can mix beauty and edibility with onion and pea plants that have beautiful blooming flowers.

Create a small garden with a fruit tree! A number of fruit trees are small enough to thrive inside a potted container. Try a Meyer lemon tree. They bear fruit twice a year and they can grow in containers as small as five gallons. These small trees can be placed on porches, back patios, and even sunrooms. Small avocado and Satsuma mandarin trees are also great ideas to bring fruit to your porch.

Raised Bed Gardens

Raised bed gardens are great because they save you from bending over and digging into hard soil. Because they are raised from the ground, the dirt inside the containers won’t be exposed to chemical fertilizers. You can fill the containers with new healthy soil and your plants will thank you. The raised garden beds also improve drainage and decrease the chance of weeds and pests. These small gardens are popular with people living in cities.
