Winter Curb Appeal

Just because it is snowing outside and the weather is cold doesn’t mean buyers aren’t looking for homes! Curb appeal and the appearance of your home is critical any time of year. Below are eight ideas for selling your home in the winter:

  1. Address all repairs prior to listing such as peeling paint and dripping gutters. Sometimes the weather doesn’t cooperate so let buyer’s know your intentions with a feature card stating what you will complete and by what date.
  2. Put the lockbox in a convenient location for easy agent access-not buried in the snow!
  3. Add winter arrangements to the front door or garage and stage for the season. It is okay to decorate for the holidays! In fact, it makes your house cozy and inviting! Showcasing the entry can also help. Place pots strategically, create focal points with Terracotta or colorful pots. Place them around the door to make a cozy entrance. Use evergreens to give the curb appeal of your home a wintry feeling or brighten up a dark doorstep with some colorful pots of evergreen topiaries.
  4. Clear the clutter by moving boots, shoes, coats from the entryway and into a closet. Keep decorations simple, clear off the countertops and other surfaces, and store items in attractive lidded storage bins so they are accessible but out of sight. This will make your home look more spacious and open.
  5. Maintain your walkways and clear the deck! Keep your walkways and driveway safe and ice-free with timely shoveling and salt to prevent potential buyers from slipping on their way to view your home. The exterior decks are just as important, as buyers will still want to step outside and view the lawn. Don’t forget to put the shovel away too!
  6. Lighting is crucial especially with less daylight hours! Since you can’t take advantage of the natural light for as long, make sure your home is well lit, both inside and out. For all showings, leave all lights on in the home as well as open all blinds and window treatments. If you won’t be home, it’s a good idea to put your lights on timers.
  7. Adjust the thermostat to ensure your house is warm and inviting. It’s cold outside, and your potential buyers will appreciate a warm welcome, and the more comfortable they are, the longer they’ll look around.
  8. Showcase the fireplace even if you don’t have it lit, arrange a few logs or candles in the fireplace so that your home looks ready to light up and entertain.
