Are you involved enough in your neighborhood?

RE/MAX suggests 4 simple ways to get involved in your neighborhood:
1. Join a group
2. Volunteer
3. Organize an Event
4. Fill a Need

Joining a group allows you to get involved in different shapes and forms. Most neighborhoods have public forums, like city council and citizen advisory groups. These groups address specific community issues and are a great way for you to not only get involved, but a great way to meet like-minded people. A simple place to start is asking your HOA and what kind of support they need.

Volunteering is another great way to meet people. Find something you are passionate about (i.e. the youth, animals, health, the elderly, etc.) and find an organizatoin you can volunteer for that fits into that category. To start, visit local hospitals, animal shelters, recreation centers and community organizations or search online if you really don’t know where to start. The City of Fort Collins offers a great volunteer information page.

Organizing an event seems like a lot of work, but it doesn’t have to be! Donation drives, block parties or book clubs are a fun way to meet neighbors and establish relationships within your community. Using flyers as an initial marketing tactic is a great idea. Provide your contact information and anyone who is interested can send you an email. You then can set up a meeting with all who responded to further discuss planning and details of the event! Hint: the Neighborhood Services in Fort Collins offers grants to throw a block party!

Filling a need not only establishes yourself as an invested community member, but also helps out others around you. Organize a neighborhood newsletter or other service that offers a way for members to connect and have a resource in case they need help with snow removal, need a weekend babysitter or maybe someone to watch their pets while they are away for the weekend. If you’re feeling ambitious, start a neighborhood association or an adopt-a-block program to keep your neighborhood clean!

Moving into a new place with new surroundings can be overwhelming. These four tips may help you establish a sense of community around your neighborhood!
