2020 Design and Lifestyle Trends

Designers say we are tired of touchscreens. We seek refuge in cozy, warm spaces. We crave connection and places that support it. And, we are crossing the boundaries in the use of appearance of where we live. These new 2020 design and lifestyle trends will define the decade.

Traditional design rules are being broken.

Metals are being mixed within one room. Brass door handles and copper light fixtures are found together. The use of metals accents, metal doors, and metal cabinets has increased, providing contrast as well as a complement with others surfaces. Be sure to keep metal from overwhelming a space by using it in small doses.

Carpet flooring and terracotta are migrating to walls and ceilings, adding warmth and coziness. Patterns are also being mixed. Animal prints are joined by florals, and bold patterns are aligned with stripes.

Old and new surfaces.

Mixing vintage and contemporary offers an unexpected aesthetic balance embraced by designers. Reclaimed products, such as an oversized farmhouse sink, get pairs with up-to-date elements or a sleek whitewashed floor.

Mosaics are seen in almost every period of decorative arts. Their use is on the rise, adding texture with a firm and permanent feel.

Marble is also a timeless material with striking veins and endless color and pattern choices, adding impact to interiors.

Color… or not!

Bold colors are being boldly applied, mixed and matched with multiple shades and contrasts, such as turquoise paired with fuchsia.

White and wood once dominated trim color, but black continues to trend. People are found embracing rich shades of black everywhere from window frames and doors to shelves and walls.

The changing use of space.

As a line between work and home blurs, dedicated work spaced become stylish and functional. Without the distraction of screens, libraries with collections of books also serve as a place to recharge. As a result, libraries are becoming and great space in new and revamped homes.

The kitchen island is evolving. The typical kitchen island with everyone gathered on one side limits engagement to the person next to you. T-shaped islands have emerged, allowing seating around corners and encouraging conversation among everyone.

Nature, inside and out!

We know that nature favorably impacts overall wellbeing. Garden rooms, indoor water fountains, waterfalls, and indoor ponds bring serenity. Not to mention these features help bring shades of green indoors. Kitchen gardens are sprouting microgreens, such as herbs and salad fixings.

Nature also draws us outdoors to spaces the become extensions of indoor space. Patios, decks, and porches are destinations. They also incorporate TVs, sound systems, comfortable furniture, and decorative elements.

The 2010s are coming to an end, so stash the succulents and farmhouse décor, it’s time to usher in the new decade of design!
